Livestock units

Definition

This indicator gives the total number of livestock of the holdings with livestock

LSU facilitates the aggregation of livestock from various species and ages. LSU coefficients are used instead of the actual number of animals in order to make comparable aggregations of different animal categories.

FSS: full census every 10 years, intermediate surveys 2/3 times in-between.

Comments/caveats

For the reference year 2020, Eurostat has introduced some changes in the collection of data. In synthesis:

  • virtual entities (common land units without a farm manager) are excluded from the table as they are not agricultural holdings 
  • agricultural holdings that do not keep animals are discarded from the table
  • the sum of the breakdowns of the dimension ANIMALS for the unit HLD does not equal the total value due to potential overlaps between animal groups. 
  • “horses” (A1000) have not been collected in 2020, but some countries may have included information about Equidae in “other animals” (A6900A).
